Last week Nintendo revealed the first bit of information about the Switch and its ability to function both as a home console and mobile gaming platform. Aside from vague details about the Switch’s Nvidia tech and a list of third-party partners, Nintendo has been mostly silent about the console.
That silence will continue until next year, it seems. Nintendo has revealed that the next big Switch announcement won’t happen until January 12, just two short months before the console is set to release in March.
Keeping quiet on the details of the console is a questionable move, especially after the Switch reveal video had game developers interested in the system but left them curious about the console’s capabilities and function.
The silence mimics the year of secrecy that followed the initial NX announcement, but it’s not entirely clear how well that worked for Nintendo the first time around, at least financially. Nintendo’s shares rose by 4 percent the day before the Switch was announced, but the console failed to impress investors and fell 6 percent after the reveal.
Regardless of Nintendo’s official stance, there’s also the chance that information on the system will find its way into the wild by way of leaked information, like the rumor about the system featuring a multi-touch capable touchscreen reported today.
