Technology studio Hidden Door has received $2 million to create a narrative-driven social game platform.
The pre-seed funding round was led by Northzone with participation from Makers Fund, Betaworks, Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, and Homebrew.
Hidden Door claims its platform will be the “world’s first narrative multiverse,” and will allow users to create and experience stories together.
“In the game, friends team up to remix story worlds styled as interactive graphic novels. With the storytelling vibe of a tabletop roleplaying game — including a playful AI narrator — anyone can improvise endless adventures together with a host of responsively generated NPCs, items, and locations,” wrote the studio.
“These, in turn, can be collected, traded, and shared with friends to remix into new worlds and stories. In the future, the game will expand to include a marketplace for content from professional writers, artists, and other players.”
Hidden Door’s platform is slated to launch in early 2022 and is being pitched at players aged 9 and over. At launch, it will feature an initial collection of original playable worlds.
The company emphasized the platform will be held to “rigorous content and safety standards,” and will eventually allow creators to “automatically adapt exciting works for this new medium.”
